MPHO JACOBS
Mpho Jacobs is a painter and digital artist from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, who is studying Visual Communication Design at the University of Stellenbosch. She began to pursue her art as a practice in 2017 and in 2021 expanded into digital art. Mpho’s artworks showcase her emotional experiences by incorporating realism with symbolic motifs and her learning of art history over the years. She is inspired to amplify subjects that she has grown up not seeing enough of within art: black individuals, and women.
In May 2019, She was awarded runner-up for the Art in the Park exhibition for the Matric category. With her interest in Visual Communication Design and the evolving relationship of art and technology, in September 2022, she presented a talk at the Stellenbosch University Museum’s ongoing Visual Literacy series for the Graphic Design category, speaking of the history of typography and graphic design, Adobe Programs designers use today and their functions, discussing whether Artificial Intelligence (A.I) will replace Graphic Designers and the commercialization of type through NFTs. In March 2023 she was awarded First Place for the UACES Dimes Exhibition, an exhibition held at the University of Pretoria and online.
